Revitalizing Colorado’s High-Elevation Highways with Stabiram® 800

Rehabilitating roadways in mountain regions presents unique challenges—high elevations, unpredictable weather, remote terrain, and limited access. Along Colorado’s rugged State Highway 149, these conditions demanded a solution that could deliver long-term performance while minimizing cost, disruption, and environmental impact. Working with the Colorado Department of Transportation, Arkema Specialty Surfactants supported the successful rehabilitation of 43 miles of roadway using Cold-In-Place Recycling (CIR) enabled by Stabiram® 800.

The Challenge

The project site featured severely aged and cracked asphalt pavement at elevations reaching 11,361 feet. Narrow roadways, intermittent cell service, and frequent weather interruptions added further complexity—making traditional rehabilitation methods costly and logistically difficult.

The Solution

Stabiram® 800 was selected to support a large-scale CIR operation, allowing the existing pavement to be recycled directly on site. In total, the project delivered more than 605,000 square yards of 4-inch CIR, recycling approximately 117,000 tons of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). This approach eliminated 4,680 truckloads of material, significantly reducing hauling, fuel use, and project disruption.

Proven Results

  • Smoother ride quality: International Roughness Index (IRI) improved from 185 to 65
  • Extended service life: Pavement life increased by an estimated 15–20 years
  • Cost efficiency: CIR at $8.78 per square yard versus $13.20 per square yard for traditional overlay
  • Sustainability gains: Approximately 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions through on-site recycling
