Calcium carbonate, one of the most abundant minerals, is the main constituent of limestone, and in its metamorphic form, marble. It is typically mined as limestone or marble depending on application, and its chemical impurities, size distribution and physical makeup dictate its end use.

Calcium carbonate is beneficiated for use in the paper, paint, plastics, pharmaceutical, and food industries and is also used in adhesives and caulks, joint and latex carpet compounds, and flooring and roofing materials.

Producing high-purity calcium carbonate is a challenge since it is rarely found in its pure form and is most often associated with several gangue minerals. Calcium carbonate beneficiation using the flotation process to remove contaminants such as iron, magnesium, and silica/silicates is required.
