Asphalt additives such as adhesion promoters and liquid asphalt anti-stripping additives are typically added to hot mix asphalt to improve aggregate coating and increase the strength and frequency of chemical bonding between asphalt and aggregate. The increased bonding strength protects pavements against moisture damage when asphalt detaches from aggregate in the presence of water. If not guarded against, moisture damage causes rutting, potholes, and, ultimately, pavements to fail prematurely.
