Hot-In-Place Asphalt Recycling for Sustainable Pavement Rehabilitation
What is Hot-In-Place Asphalt Recycling?
Hot-in-place asphalt recycling (HIR) is an in-place pavement rehabilitation process that restores cracked, oxidized, and deteriorated asphalt pavements by reusing the existing pavement material. Arkema's Restore® hot-in-place asphalt recycling technology helps agencies rehabilitate roadways while reducing construction costs, minimizing traffic disruptions, and supporting more sustainable infrastructure.
Compared to conventional milling and paving, HIR recycles existing asphalt in place, reducing the need for new materials while delivering a durable, cost-effective pavement solution.
How Restore® Hot-In-Place Recycling Works
Restore® utilizes a continuous recycling process that heats and mills the existing pavement to a typical depth of 1.5 to 2.5 inches. A specialized asphalt emulsion featuring Arkema's exclusive emulsifier chemistry is blended with the reclaimed material before it is windrowed, transferred to a conventional paver, and compacted using standard rollers.
Because the process is continuous, Restore® produces a smooth, uniform pavement surface using 100% recycled pavement material, which is typically finished with a thin surface treatment.
Benefits of Hot-In-Place Asphalt Recycling
- Reduces rehabilitation costs by 30–40% compared to conventional paving
- Reuses 100% of the existing pavement material
- Supports sustainable pavement construction
- Minimizes traffic disruptions and user delays
- Delivers a smooth, uniform finished pavement
- Reduces the need for virgin materials
